Workplace Yoga is for all people no matter their age,  current health or level of flexibility or role they play in the organisation.  Offering yoga classes at work, or off-site, is a low-cost and effective way to achieve happy and productive employees.

It is reported that companies lose around $14,000 per employee on health related productivity costs annually. Companies that offer yoga and other wellness programmes can positively impact engagement and productivity resulting in an increase in bottom line.

Among the benefits include dealing with stress and anxiety; creating inner peace, calm and presence, weight management, flexibility, managing pain and improving your breathing. A 2010 review of the research on yoga and depression in the Journal of Psychiatric Practice evaluated eight trials based on individuals with clinical depression and depression symptoms. Benefits were found in relation to mindfulness, physical activity, decreased stress reactivity and increased sleep regulation,

Yoga provides cardiovascular benefits by lowering resting heart rate and improving oxygen uptake during exercise. The breathing practice, known as Pranayama, helps you slow down and deepen your breaths. It activates the bodys parasympathetic system or how we relax.

Further benefits of Workplace Yoga include:

  • Decline in stress-related sick occurrences
  • Improved concentration, decision-making skills and ability to multi-task
  • Improves employee alertness and ability to react more calmly in demanding situations
  • Relief of head, neck and back strain, carpal tunnel syndrome, insomnia, high blood pressure and work-related injuries from repetitive motion Enhanced employee attitude and outlook
  • General well-being in the workplace which reduces employee turnover

Phebra has successfully utilised an in house yoga program conducted by The Yoga House corporately since 2014.Originally the concept to use this service came from a need to help staff deal with the stress in a transition to a new site, offices etc. However, the Company determined that many staff sat for considerable periods at desks or performing routine tasks in the new plant. It was correctly felt that providing staff a yoga course on site would help them dealing with this stress and repetitive work. It was decided to offer the course inside our building to provide (and encourage) use and access.

A further advantage is that it allowed staff at different levels within the Company from senior management to manufacturing staff, to mix in a non-threatening environment. We have found this has improved communication and engagement. Phebra is very pleased with the results of the course and intends to maintain the offering to staff into the future.
